Set one finds Josie Roth and Jeff Boynton in a duo that encompasses viola, cello, voice, and circuit-bent instruments of Jeff’s design. It’s impossible to imagine Los Angeles avant-garde music without the contributions of pioneers like Josie and Jeff who have consistently blazed their own trails, remain steadfastly devoted to their art, and whose deep histories and experiences inform their creative impulses.

Our second set is provided by Bishkek Wedding, a relatively recent grouping of fine musicians whose backgrounds also span periods and scenes that are integral to LA musical history. Their music is highly improvisational, with nods to rock, jazz, and 20 & 21st century composition. Mostly steering admirably clear of foreground vs background / soloist vs rhythm section dynamics, Bishkek’s focus is more concerned with the relationships among the sonic fields created by the players. There’s some storytelling going on, possibly the overlapping voices of multiple unreliable narrators.
